Hello All!
I thought I might take some time to share a few thoughts on those interactive communities on the internet like 2nd Life.
I have recently discovered that my 12 year old brother is a member of a site called Club Pengiun. All the players are penguins believe it or not. His pengiun is called "Mikeranga" (his nickname at school coz he has the slightest tinge of red in his hair). Thankfully he's realised that to become an actual 'member' you have to pay $5 bucks American.
But it got me thinking, which is scary, and I remembered the first lecture which had the 4corners report on 2nd Life. I don't know how people can spend their day trapped in a virtual world. And then there was that old white guy whose 'avitar' is a 20-something Afro-American. You can't tell me that there aren't other people don't make themselves more attractive on the web. I mean, if my little brother can set up an account on a virtual world and act like he's older, what's to say other kids don't too.
This makes regulating this issue really difficult, esp with pedaphiles. Yes I think that it's important but how are you going to police a website where nothing is as it seems? I read today that Britain is cracking down on the gaming industry with ganing online and virtual worlds also been included. It also looks like we're gonna follow with game makers calling for an adult rating to be introduced for some games. Of course this means that the government or whoever is gonna review the whole system and then you'll find we adopt Brittish laws - it wouldn't be the first time.
Anyway, that's my say on the matter but feel free to add or comment if you agree, disagree or want to add your opinion.
Until next time
Smile =)

My association with communication technology
Hello again.
Well according to the title you'd think that I was required to write this post. You we're right - I did. I meant to post it on Monday afternoon after reading it through but I forgot =s.
Question 1:
I have to say no but in saying that there are people I do know (or have known) that I only contact through the World Wide Web. Through my MySpace account I have been able to catch up with family and friends who have moved, as well as people I haven't seen in years. The chances of actually sitting on the phone for an hour or meeting up for coffee with some of them is pretty slim.
A lot of my extended family lives down in southern NSW and I haven't seen many of my cousins since we were toddlers. But having stuff like hotmail, msn and MySpace has helped keep in contact.
Question 2: How long have I been using these forms of communication technologies you ask?
I have to admit that I'm not that technology savy. Until recently I didn't rely on email. I just had my school-issued webmail address. Now I have three - two of which I very rearly look at.
Question 3: What influenced me to start using these particular technologies?
I guess I started really using the net to keep in touch with friends after finishing school last year.
Question 4: Is privacy an issue?
Privacy is a bit of a concern which is why I have my MySpace account set on 'private' and don't add people I don't know. I also leave out specifics like what school I went to and where I work. But meh - I don't really think about it all that much. Norton 360 can do some the work.
Well, that was all incedably dry - but it had to done. Not feeling in the mood to say much else so I'll end it here.
Until next time, keep =)ing

Once upon a time...
...there was a girl named Jo. And that would be me.
Hello all!
I'm in my first year of uni and fresh outta high school. I'm slowly getting used to the difference have got the stage that I already hate reading. Not that I really do, it's just coz there's so much of it.
I'm doing a Bachelor of Arts majoring at this stage in media and communications. I chose a BA coz it is broad and I can change my mind if I want to (and I tend to quite a bit). I want a job that i can be creative in and work with people (coz I like people). I'm thinking of public reations but haven't decided yet.
I would love to work in radio coz I love music. I will listen to ANYthing at least once. It doesn't matter what genre or artist. If I haven't heard of a song, chances are that I'll want to. Sometimes I'll use song lyrics in everyday conversation (kinda like the Gilmore Girls - yes I can understand what they're saying).
This whole blog thing is VERY new to me so you'll have to bear with me.
That is all for now
Until next time smile and be happy =)
